It's almost the same, but "heed" has a stronger sense of attention.
It's not used in a normal daily conversation because it sounds old-fashioned and archaic. You'll find it in old novels, poems, or movies that are set in very old times (kings and queens' times).
Take heed to what he says, for he is very wise.
To pay no heed to someone is to disregard or ignore them.
