Yes, the first is correct because “I saw the play” before the others went to the theater. These are two past events where one event happened before the other.
I DON’T want to join them because I’VE ALREADY SEEN that play twice. Present tense followed by present perfect.
I DIDN’T want to join them for the theather. I HAD ALREADY SEEN that play twice. Past simple tense followed by past perfect tense.
