Ditch has more than one meaning.
It can be a channel dug along one or both sides of a road to catch the water and direct it where it needs to go.
“The kids played in the ditch, catching tadpoles and getting thoroughly wet in the process.”
It also means to get rid of a lover or friend by just leaving without any explanation.
“He ditched her at the party and went home with her best friend.”

As a noun, “ditch” could be a narrow channel or trench alongside a road or field. Ditches are usually dug for drainage.
This could also be used as a verb meaning to dig a trench, to drive or derail into one, even to crash-land a plane on water.
However, “to ditch someone or something” means to walk away and never come back. You can ditch a person you don’t like any more. You can also ditch school or work. In both cases, you get rid of them, you just get away. Hopefully, you won’t need to do that. :)
