There is no difference, they can be used interchangeably! Older than him just sounds more natural.

It should be, grammatically correct version, "older than he", which is the same as "older than he is", but we drop the "is". My kids think it sounds a little stuffy to say "older than he", so I tell them to put the "is" back on the end... "older than he is" sounds a bit more relaxed. We can use the "than him" construction when the pronoun is substituted for an object of the noun. For instance, I have a brother, and I say: "My mother loves me *more than him*"; I could be be complaining that my brother is my mother's favorite. To be through, there could also be the sentence, "My mother loves me *more than he*," which is saying that my mother loves me more than my brother loves me... Atama ga itai, desu ka?
