@studiousboy a little bit. It could be used if someone completed an undergraduate course and are pursuing higher education, but nothing much beyond that.

@studiousboy that too! Being a postgraduate means you’re still in education, just that it’s more advanced.
- Simplified Chinese (China)
@Amberina Thank you! What if I said “I’m a graduate student”? Does this sound natural too and mean the same thing?
- English (US)
@studiousboy it sounds natural but the meaning is a little different. A graduate student has completed a bachelors degree and is getting education in a specific field. A postgraduate has only complete an undergraduate program and is pursuing higher education.
Basically, you have to be a postgraduate before becoming a graduate.
- Simplified Chinese (China)
@Amberina Sorry, I’m still a little confused. A postgraduate has only complete an undergraduate program. But that would already mean that postgraduate has completed a bachelor’s degree, right?
- English (US)
@studiousboy No. The goal of the undergraduate program is to get the bachelor degree. Once you get that, then you become a graduate and look for higher education, typically masters or graduate degree.
- Simplified Chinese (China)
@Amberina Yes, that’s true. That’s why I don’t see any difference between “postgraduate” and “graduate student”. Both of them mean someone has already completed the undergraduate program and had a bachelor’s degree.
- English (US)
@studiousboy not exactly. The time line of a postgraduate is:
Undergraduate program to bachelors degree.
Meaning you end with the bachelor degree.
The time line of a graduate is:
Bachelor degree to higher education.
Meaning you start with a bachelor degree.

@Amberina Thanks for the explanation! So if I already have a bachelor’s degree and I’m studying further, then I’m a graduate student instead of a postgraduate, right?
