Take is a versatile verb (has some noun usages as well) used in many expression. In its most common usage, it is a synonym for "receive," but can also have connotation of "steal" or "accept ownership." It can also be used in other ways: "This is taking too long." "It takes time." "It takes money." "It takes patience." Here it is similar to "costs," (making it more like かかり).

In the original sentence you provided, it is following a construction of "Taking" A and "Doing" B. You will notice many of the sentences I provided follow a similar construction. Here is a sentence closer to the original: "Until this very moment, I never understood the thrill of TAKING a brush in hand, and CREATING something beautiful."

Minor correction to your sentence:
"I had not realized the enjoyment of taking pictues of something 面白い and showing them to my friends."
It needs to be "had not realized" instead of "have not realized," because you now realize. Your lack of understanding is in the past.

Unlike in Japanese, which has many different words for "take" depending on the noun, we have just the one and there are many ways to use it! Is the taking/doing construction very common? I've never really thought about it before, but as you continue to learn English I'm sure you will be in a better position to judge.

This is similar to a Japanese particle: で tells us a tool or means by which something is done, in English this is often equated with "with" or "by," but the take/do construction is similar. "I took the sword and cut down my enemy." In order to "cut down my enemy" I first had to 刀で. It is not quite the same, but similar in a respect.
