Question about English (US)
Hi
My American niece pronounces sure exactly the same as shore, which is a synonym for beach. I’ve always believed and been taught that sure sounds more like “shuur” not “shore” if you get what I’m tying to express here.
The same thing applies to “poor” and “pour”, the first one of which I believed to be pronounced more like “pure” without the “y” sound.
So how do you pronounce those words?
Are the people who would pronounce them like I do extinct now?
Thanks

I'm from Oregon.
For me, "sure" is /ʃɝ/ ...or in other words it's an "r" sound replacing the vowel altogether.
When I do add a vowel sound before the "r" deliberately, it's an "o" sound, the way your niece says it.
There are people out there who say it with an "ooh" sound like /ʃur/ , and those people are mostly from the east side of the US, in New York and those places.
Those people are also the same ones who pronounce "poor" the way you described.
I say "poor" the same way I say "pour", but I do hear people from "out of state" pronouncing it the other way.
