I've never heard it used. WE'd say Aussie. I think the refernce to convict is because way back when Australia was first settled there was a penal colony.

@Darryl1 Absolutely not. I have never in my life understood the word "convict" as anything other than a prisoner. I have never heard of it to refer to an Australian. Perhaps you are misremembering?
