It’s a play on the name ‘Edward’ most likely. Squidward his a rival named Squilliam which sounds like it comes from ‘William’.

Not sure what it means in his name, but a "ward" can describe a young child you raise. Think of Robin from Batman. Robin is Batman's ward. A ward can also describe something that keeps something else out or away.
