It means "Be quiet". It is common, but said more to adolescents or children. Adults say it to other adults, but less often, I think. It is sort of a mash-up of "Hush" and "Shut your mouth". It is informal.
"Shush it. You've already said too much."
"Nobody wants to hear your excuses. Just shush it."
"Shush it. I'm trying to watch TV."

I haven't heard anyone say "shush it" before, but I have heard people say "shut it" and "shush".
"Shush" means "be quiet". "Shut it" also means "be quiet", but it is more rude and informal.
If someone said " shush it", it would likely also mean "be quiet".
