Not normally. When I hung out with Indian students in college, they considered themselves Asian in a way, or pan-Asian. But mostly, they just considered themselves Indians. I think most Americans, wrongly, think Indians aren't Asian.

I think people tend to mainly think of east Asia when they think of the word "Asian", but India is in the continent of Asia, and Indians are also Asians. Sometimes they may specify that they are south Asian

it is always very difficult or impossible to put clear lines between where different ethnicities begin and end. If Indians are Asian, which they certainly technically are, then why are Europeans not? or the Middle East? Central Asia? it's just not useful semantically to call everyone Asian. These cultures and regions are not alike. Using someone's actual ethnicity should be preferable anyways.
From what I've seen, most Indians do consider themselves Asian, and recognize that most people probably don't. https://youtu.be/naZ1dsMQJR8

This video got me to ask this question. No one named India despite the fact that the country is well-known.

In Japan we regard Indian people as Asian just like they do.

@Jamiro we generally think of Indians as Indian and Japanese as Japanese. People don’t generally get technical on who’s an Asian. That said, I’d personally think of Japanese, Chinese, Korean or Vietnamese first if someone said “Name an Asian nationality”, all the while knowing that there are many others.

Although Indians are technically Asian, most Americans think of East-Asian countries (like China, Japan, Korea, Thailand, etc.) when mentioning Asia, and don't typically call Indian people as Asian.

people in the U.S. are kinda slow when it comes to this. If you say “asian”, anericans think of china, korea, and japan. Americans use direction when referring to where in asia someone is from. For example, middle east asia is used for places like saudi arabia, pakistan, iran, etc. , south asia is used for philippines, malaysia, indonesia, south asia is used for japan, china, korea.

@Jamiro yes. Technically India is in Asia, so any educated American would consider them Asian. However, a lot of Americans only consider Japan, China, and the Koreas asian countries.
