Question about United Kingdom
Are young people in England or other Europe not interested in opera?
I‘ve seen opera in London and Verona and there were only a few young people, I'm just curious.

It depends. I know lots of people who love opera, but that is because I am an opera singer 🤪 Many people here think it is too expensive (it is actually much cheaper than musicals or sports events in fact) or wouldn’t consider going because there is very little exposure to opera for most people so they think it is “elite”. Often when they actually hear it (say as a theme to a football event or on a singing competition or at a wedding), they really love it.
Opera is more popular around continental Europe than the U.K. generally.
There are “family operas” sometimes which are very popular, like Coraline by Mark-Anthony Turnage. Some opera companies put on shows in schools. But most parents don’t take their kids to the opera so they don’t get to know any.
I tend to despair when people think opera or classical music is boring - there are so many different styles and production styles, it would be like listening to just one or two bands and deciding that the whole of pop music is boring!

It’s never interested me. My parents like it, but I find it boring - apart from comic operas like Gilbert and Sullivan works.

It's just vowels 🤷♀️
Although, yes, I once saw the Pirates of Penzance and that was fun. I think.

@yitian-73- I’m at University in the UK and I don’t think I’ve met a single person who likes opera lol. It’s normally seen as an ‘old person’ kind of thing. Especially since it’s quite expensive, and can be boring if you’re not used to it.
Usually people make jokes like ‘I love all genres of music! Other than Country and Opera’.
I think Opera is a more niche interest though, and I’m sure there are young people interested in it!
