I think 1 is the most common by far, but I’ve heard 3 before. We don’t use 2.

I hear “pay with cash” most often, but any of those would be correct and understood

@bsloan7 @Kitty_Cats Thank you! Which sentences sound natural among these three, though?
1. Will you pay by credit card *or in cash*?
2. Will you pay by credit card *or with cash*?
3. Will you pay by credit card *or cash*?

2. Will you pay by credit card *or with cash*?
3. Will you pay by credit card *or cash*?

@studiousboy None of them sound completely natural to me because we usually say “with (credit) card”. It’s also a lot more common not to form a complete sentence in this situation at all and just say “card or cash” because the person you’re speaking to already knows what you’re talking about. But if I did make it a complete sentence, I would say:
Are you paying with card or (in) cash?
or
Will you pay with card or (in) cash?

@bsloan7 All dictionaries use “by credit card”, but Americans usually say “with credit card”? That surprises me a bit. 😳
Also, which of these sounds more natural to you? Or both sound natural?
1. How much cash do you have *on you*?
2. How much cash do you have *with you*?

@bsloan7 Thank you. Are there any other prepositions besides “on” and “with” that would work in this blank?
How much cash do you have ____ you?
How much cash do you have ____ you?
- English (US)
@studiousboy No, I think those are the only two that work.

@bsloan7 Ok. To confirm, Americans only say “pay *with* card” and never say “pay *by* card”? If so, I’m shocked that all dictionaries use “by”. 😥

@studiousboy Again, I can’t speak for all Americans. Maybe some people do say “pay by card”, but I don’t think I’ve ever heard it. I usually hear “with” or no preposition at all depending on the sentence.

@bsloan7 No preposition at all? I know “pay in cash” can be no preposition, but “pay with card” can also be no preposition and become “pay card”?
- English (US)
@studiousboy No, I was referencing “card or cash” when I said that. But it is possible for a customer to make a sentence without a preposition in this context as well. For example, I’ve heard people say “I’ll pay using my card” or just “I’ll use my card”.

@bsloan7 Ok, so “pay cash” is correct with no preposition, but only “pay with card” is correct, we can’t say simply “pay card”. I get it. Thank you!
