Both are used to express wishes or intentions.
"Möchten" is the polite version of "wollen": it's less demanding, and in some case maybe also expressing that you are not quite sure yourself how much you want something (to happen).
In English, it might translate to "I would like to (learn German)" in contrast to "I want to (learn German".
You can probably feel the difference between
"Ich möchte gerne (eines Tages) nach Paris reisen"
- (One day) I would like to travel to Paris -
and
"Ich will nach Paris reisen"
- I want to travel to Paris -
