“Nothing more or less” is a fancy way to say “exactly equal.”
You would say this to emphasize the point. It also connotes finality. It cannot be changed.
“Everyone gets one bowl of soup. Nothing more or less.”
“I am a disappointed fan. I am really disappointed, they let me down.”

@morrisononodje I apologize! I only read 2
For 1 “nothing more or less” would mean “It is what it is”
As in “oh well”
2 would mean that his response was not good or that he didn’t care, or “not really”

“More or less” means it is about the same, but not exactly.
“When you made these cookies, did you use exactly 500 mL of sugar?”
“More or less.” “They taste bad. You must be precise.”
Usually, “more or less” is used to indicate that being exact was not important.
“Did he say he was going to marry you?” Here, “More or less” means the essence of what he said was he wants to marry. But he did not promise to marry.
In this passage, the speaker is wishing that he said it, and wants to say he wants to marry. But he didn’t. So saying “More or less” is speaker lying to themself.

Okay, the first part of your explanation was crystal clear. But not the second. When you say the "essence of what he said was he wants to marry, but he didn't promise to marry," how do you mean?

For 1, Is "nothing more/less" just another way of saying "it wasn't that serious/personal as you guys are putting it"?

@morrisononodje yes, I would say he’s saying that it’s nothing serious
In a literal sense, nothing more/less would mean that it isn’t more or less. As in it’s nothing better, nothing worse in 1’s context

@morrisononodje English is pretty confusing! Lol
But, I’d recommend not thinking too hard, just think it as a similar phrase to “oh well” or “not really”
Imagine the person is sighing when they say that!
I can’t think of an example outside being similar to those 2 words😅

😅. You see, that's where the problem is. "not really" as in? You know what? No offence, but I think I might just have to repost and see if I will get more responses in that regard.
