"I wanna" is slang and informal and means either "want a" or "want to"
"I want to" is formal.
Ex. I wanna go home, bro.
Ex. I want to schedule a meeting on Thursday.
Ex. I wanna sandwich.

You wouldn't use "wanna" for a school paper or essay, because it actually isn't a real word in the dictionary. But it is very common to use everyday with anyone, older or younger.

Supplementary comment:
When we see "want to", we usually read it aloud as "wanna".
That doesn't mean it should be written that way for formal pieces, though.
