Question about English (US)
What does Wind proof
Insect proof mean?
What does Wind proof
Insect proof mean?
Insect proof mean?
Answers
- English (US)
Something that is X-proof is invulnerable or impenetrable to X. For example, waterproof boots do not let in any water, and bulletproof vests do not let bullets through.
So, something that is wind-proof does not let wind through or is not damaged by wind, and something that is insect-proof either doesn't let insects inside it or cannot be damaged by insects.

@ObstreperousB What is the difference between suggest to your friend about playing tennis and suggest to your friend to play tennis ?
- English (US)
Neither of those is natural. You could "suggest that your friend play tennis" or "make a suggestion to your friend to play tennis" or "make a suggestion that your friend should play tennis."
If you mean a suggestion about the way your friend plays tennis, rather than simply telling them to play it, that would be something like "a suggestion about your friend's tennis technique."

@Omer_Ibrahim Neither of those are something a native speaker would actually say. I'm 99% sure they're not technically correct either, but I went with "not natural" instead of "incorrect" just in case there was some unusual usage I hadn't considered.

@Omer_Ibrahim Well, "hooking someone up" can be kind of shady. A person who sells stolen goods to someone else at a low price would be "hooking them up." When you use it to talk about getting something for someone, there's an implication that the person doing the hooking up has some kind of secret or advantage that the general public doesn't have. It doesn't have to be illegal, but it's usually kind of… secretive isn't exactly the right word, but something like that. Someone who works at a store and uses their employee discount to get their friends a deal on items from that store would also be "hooking them up."
So, if I heard someone talk about their friend "hooking them up," I would probably think the friend was generous, but not necessarily trustworthy.

@Omer_Ibrahim In the first one, the kid says "you-know-what" because "ass" is a mild swear word, and people who don't want to swear will sometimes use "you-know-what" as a substitute for the actual swear word. "Working your ass off" is working very hard.
I think part of the joke is that usually people will try to avoid swearing in front of children, but here it's the child who is trying to avoid swearing and the parent who is just saying the swear word.
