Her recent role failed to escape the shadow of her previous work…

I’d say
Her recent role coudn't surpass her previous one.
The shadow of the previous one, to me, says that the previous role was NOT good. Shadow usually indicates something bad.
I’d like to hear what others think of this.

"when you say that somebody is in/under the shadow of another person, you mean that they do not receive as much attention as that person"
So I though shadow implies that the previous one too good/ successful to compare or beat it. Like when it comes to Brooklyn Beckham, people would think of his father or call him David Beckham's son.

@Lee_D237 I see what you’re saying. So in your sentence the previous ONE refers to a person, not a previous performance?
If a previous performance: Her recent performance couldn’t surpass her previous one.
If a person: Her recent performance couldn’t surpass that of her predecessor. In every role, she was always in the shadow of her predecessor.

Yes, exactly what I meant, doesnt matter if it's a person/ thing ..., depending on the context. The "shadow" here is some kind of comparative. So I was a bit confused as you said "Shadow usually indicates something bad."
