Question about English (US)
What is this construction with IF+present perfect?
What is this construction with IF+present perfect?
If events in my life have had a huge direct influence, I would have put them in, but they didn’t.
I've never seen such a construction of the conditional, I am now wondering when is this used and for what purpose. I would put 'had had' so it can be the third conditional, but present perfect confuses me. Can someone please explain or give some examples?
edit: thanks! it might be a typo. I copied it from some text which is like a multiple-choice reading exercise, however, it was not copied from some book, but from some test prepared by a language school.

Actually, I think that it should be "had had."
... but that's kinda based on my gut/ear.
because the second clause uses "would have," I think the first one ought to be past perfect: If the events had had..."
I'm sorry I can't quote the usage rules though.

@jovie09 Alternatively, if the first clause remains "if it events in my life have had...." then the second clause should use present conditional or possibly future.
"...I would put them in/ I will put them in..."

This doesn’t make sense. Should be “if events in my life had had”
