Trainers is UK English. Sneakers is US English. Canadians tend to use running shoes.

I think they are pretty interchangeable. But I personally say "sneakers."
The use of one word over another might be regional. For example, different parts of the United States say "soda" or "pop" or "coke."

For most people, they are American vs British slang.
In truth, there actually are different categories of shoes, one of which being "trainers". Trainers specifically have more stability and support to help with activities like weight lifting or crossfit (cross-trainers are like hybrid trainers/running shoes). Im less sure if "sneaker" is an actual category and not just a brand or slang, but these would be more everyday wear or running focused.
Like I said, most people will not care or even know. The distinction that trainers are a very specific type of shoe will only matter if you're in a specialty shoe store buying high end athletic shoes .
source: I spend too much money on "running shoes" and know people, Americans in fact, with way too many (upwards up 20 pairs) who DO care about the difference, but these are very dedicated athletes, not the average person ;)
From what I've read, the shoes that the British originally called "trainers" were in truth the same as mentioned above and different from what Americans were calling "sneakers" at the time. This kind of goes in the bucket of "useless trivia" but it's kind of interesting to. This article does a better job than I ever could: https://loomfootwear.com/blogs/news/differences...

Sneakers is not used in many parts of the U.S. Instead we often say running shoes, Tennis shoes, boat shoes, squash shoes, basketball shoes, etc.
