- English (US)
It means that a certain (business) arrangement was non-profitable. It cost us money.
"I thought our contract with Acme Corporation was going to be very profitable, but we lost on that deal."
It can also be used in non-business situations, or as a metaphor.
"I helped Thomas move because he said he would help me paint my house. But he never kept his promise. I lost on that deal." (I contributed something, but I didn't get anything in return)
"All of my friends and I supported and voted for Thomas, but once he was in office, he wouldn't even talk to us. We lost on that deal." (We spent a lot of time and money campaigning for Thomas, but we got nothing in return)
