「多生｣の方が一般的ですが、「他生｣でも間違いとは言いきれない、位でしょうか。（間違いだ、と断言する人がいてもおかしくはないです）
「多生｣は、何度もの生まれ変わりの中で、のようなイメージ。
「他生｣は、現世ではなく、生まれ変わる前の前世で（本来の「他生｣には、生まれ変わった後の来世も含まれますが）、と言うようなイメージですね。
また、この表現は、現代日本では
袖振り合うも多生の縁
（※「触れ｣ではなく「振り｣が正しいとされています）
で、1フレーズになっているため、置き換えることは難しいと思います。
「因縁｣自体は、現代日本では悪い意味に取る人が多いです。使わないで済むなら、使わない方がいい単語だと思います。
