Question about English (US)
Do Americans use the pronoun "they" when talking about an unknown gender?
I've heard that the pronoun “it" sounds somehow disrespectful. Is “they” more of a conversational pronoun?

@pelagXD I would stick to "they" for an unknown gender of humans, "it" is for animals and objects. some peoples prefer "it" but always ask before calling a person "it"

Yes, we use "they" for unknown gender. Calling a person "it" would be very rude and insinuates you don't think of them as a person. I've never met a person who wants to go by "it. " We do call infants of unknown gender "it" but sometimes people think that's rude too.
