That's a bit fuzzy,
Normally you use 'Ich möchte' for that matter.
Möchte is Konjuntiv of mögen.
Translated that would actually be 'I liked' -> I'd like.
The other way to express 'I want' is 'Ich will'.
That word has developed differently in both languages. In german 'Ich will', nowadays is mostly understood as wanting something forcefully.
At marriages you still say "Ich will" but that's normal.
There's no meaning in between as far as I see right now.
Ich möchte -> polite
Ich will -> mostly unpolite
In old movies, germans sometimes use 'will' like english speakers do.
Dutch speakers use it like "want"
