@Taka_424 Not something has changed in your area. It means that you notice something different about the people in another area. Example. Assume people in your city are average in height. You visit another city and everyone is much taller than you. You are surprised at the difference and have no obvious and logical way to explain the difference. Since you can't explain it, you would say that there must be something in the water. It's an expression, you don't actually believe it.

It's quite hard to comprehend this sentence since there is no context.
Literally, it means, the thing has to be, must be a thing, that is positionally inside water, implicitly saying that it can be a creature or some stuff from the water. Still, we cannot tell whether the thing currently, is in the water or not.

This is an expression about the people who live in a given area. They are abnormal in some way. They might be physically strong, tall, smart, crazy or any other attribute. It implies that there must be something about the water they all drink that gives them that attribute.
It's usually derogatory, crazy for example, but not always.

It’s frequently said as a joke after you notice someone acting crazy.
Let’s say you’re visiting a big city and notice a person dancing crazily through the streets and generally acting weird or stupid. I’d say “Whoa! Must be something in the water around here!”
It’s not literal.

I recently found this YouTube channel and I'm enjoying it. It's a collection of short science fiction stories originally posted on the website Reddit. This channel narrates them while also providing the text. The narrator isn't always faithful to the text, but he only makes minor changes or occasionally misreads a word. He also has a British accent, still it should be good listening practice and hopefully entertaining as well.
