Good question. The expression is – “brand-new“ – and it comes from the mark that a hot brand makes on a horse, or other livestock.
When you are branding animals, you heat up a branding iron, and push it into their flesh – at that moment, it is new in a way which it will never be again. It is hot, the animal is in pain, there is a smell of the burning flesh, and the wound sticks out from the body.
This wound just happened. It is totally new. Brand-new.
