「戻します」sounds more specific. Put the thing back to exact spot like, put the book back to bookshelf, put the plates back in the shelf, put the clothes in the drawer, or put the pen pack to pen case.
「返します」means return the stuff back to a place like, return the book to library, return the car to my friend.
