Hard water is water with high mineral content. It's typically what you find in nature. Soft water is water with a low mineral content. This is what there'd be after water is filtered or distilled.

@InsertANameHere FWIW, soft water is quite common in nature, too. It just depends on what sort of source the water comes from. Surface water (such as from streams or rivers) is often fairly soft. Water pulled from ground sources (wells, etc) is usually much harder.

@Foogod I'm sorry, you're right. I just wanted to give a short explanation fitting the context (someone with access to both hard and soft water to give to pets would likely have hard water from their source, which they could soften through various processes). It only accounted for what I was considering.
