"Next to" you implies that the thing is extremely close.
"The girl is sitting next to the tree." --> This means that the girl is sitting so close to the tree that she is probably touching it.
"Close to" and "nearby" are a little bit further away than "next to."
"The girl is close to the tree."--> The girl is near the tree but probably not as close as if she was next to.
That being said, these differences are pretty small.
