but say: I OFTEN HEAR... (that is more common) .
yes you can usually use either one.
except for food (i think...). "How is your dinner?" Very GOOD.
not really "very NICE". (how can food be nice?)
very good means it tastes good and you like it.

yes i think that fits fine. I guess the food thing sticks in my head b/c my mother says "nice" when talking about food. "how's your chicken mom?" Very NICE!
I say..... Mom do you personally KNOW the chicken? Was he NICE? or was he MEAN?

when someone shows you a new car.. you'd say.. "very nice!" as a compliment... not very good
when someone does a good job on something, you could say either one.
"nice work!" OR "good work"
it's 'situational'. the more you practice the better you'll get!
