i think anyone you report to, could be 'the boss'. sometimes as a joke, people say their wife is "the boss".
i don't think this word is used that much anymore. people tend to use the person's title (i.e. CEO, CFO, etc.) rather than say he / she is the "boss".

I agree, other than usage; I definitely encountered it a lot at work, in a retail setting.
Also, our store manager liked to ironically call our customers that in conversation with them (but without sarcasm😉):
Customer: (body language says they have a question) "Excuse me..."🤔
Store manager: "How can I help you, boss?"🙂
(Or, if she was acquainted with them:)
"What's up, boss?"😁

@IpseXD Thank you! Your store manager themselves is a boss, right? Why do they call the customer “boss”?

Just a good natured joke.
But on the other hand, when you work in retail, at least in Canada and the States, "the customer is king" is very true...
Also, without customers, the store would close, so with the power of their money and purchasing choices, customers sometimes are our "boss/commander/higher status than us."
Retail is also known as a service industry in English, so sometimes that's how we have to act: "We live to serve."
Hope that helps 😉
