“nerd” is not as bad as it was in the past. nowadays “nerd” can be a good thing because a lot of “nerdy” things are popular like comics and superhero movies.

I would say it’s more often used as a term of endearment or a light-hearted playful tease. Nobody really uses “nerd” as an insult with true malice anymore
