Question about German
How do you say this in German? Ich müsste mit dem, was ich tat, aufhören.
This structure is not clear to me. I assume “aufhoren” takes “mit”? So you’re saying, “I had to stop it, what I was doing”?
Ich höre mit dem auf. I stop it? Hör auf mit dem. Stop it?

You would probably translate it as: I had to stop what I was doing.
Literally: I had to stop with that, which I was doing.
Hör auf damit = Stop that
Damit -> with that
Ich habe damit kein Problem = I don't have a problem with that.
Ich bin damit einverstanden = I agree with that / I'm OK with that

Would it be easier for me if I just did two sentences:
Ich habe Füssball gespielt. Aber, deswegen mein Knie, musste ich damit aufhören.
Natural sounding?

I would express it like this:
- Ich habe (früher mal) Fußball gespielt, aber wegen meines Knies musste ich damit aufhören.
I used to play soccer, but because of my knee I had to stop.
