Неужели в сербском тоже такое есть? 😂 Короче — если у предмета есть какое-то "правильное" положение, то его можно "ставити", если нет, то его в любом случае "положити". Если чашка находится на столе дыркой кверху — она стоит; если на боку — лежит.

@Momy96 I think @Xeniolum explained it correctly. The basic idea is that "staviti" means "to put" and "položiti" means "to lay down", in a sense that it's in a horizontal position.
So, using the same example, you can "staviti" a glass on the table (you put it on the table the normal way) or you can "položiti" a glass on the table (you lay it on the table horizontally).
Also, "položiti" has more than one use. For example, "položiti novce na račun" (to deposit the money into the account). You could also say "staviti novce na račun", it has the same meaning.
Also, "položiti ispit" means "to pass an exam".

As others have already said, položiti is used only for lying things down(horizontally). Položiti knjigu, časopis, sunđer (book, magazine, sponge)... And staviti is used for any types of placing object (no matter if it's horizontal or vertical). Also položiti is rarely used today, my first thought when I read this question was "Položiti is kinda archaic". So yeah, in general you can only use staviti, it can be used for everything, plus it's more natural.
Stavio sam knjigu na sto.
Položio sam knjigu na sto.
(I put/placed the book on the table)
Both are correct, but the first one sounds more natural (there's not that strong division between laying down and putting vertically like in Russian — samo staviš sve :) )
