The basic meaning is the same â but they indicate different types of relationships.
If I want to live up to somebodyâs expectations, it indicates that I have some kind of personal relationship with this person, and if I donât do well, it will affect my emotions and this relationship.
Whereas, if I say that I am trying to meet expectations, it sounds less personal. When you apply for a job, or work at a job, or go to a university â the people there have expectations that you will have to satisfy. But you donât have a personal relationship with these people, so it is less involved with the emotions.
