What does as it so happens mean?

What does "as it so happens" mean in the following paragraphs?

Last year, Lillian learned that when something good happens, Japanese people celebrate the moment by whacking open a lid of a sake barrel using a hammer. The custom, if you remember, is called kagami-blraki ("opening the mirror") because the lid's round flat shape resembles a mirror. Now, as it so happens, there's another custom with the same name. It takes place during New Year's, is also celebratory and likewise requires clobbering with a mallet.
