To be short with someone – to treat someone a little bit rudely, as if you are angry at them.
We also call this – being terse, or curt.
It’s not exactly the same thing as being angry – it’s like you can’t be bothered to help them, or to be nice to them.

I think we’re just so used to these phrases, we don’t often think about what they mean. To be short-tempered means to become angry easily.
