"Have a seat" in a formal situation (e.g. guests, business meetings, parent-teacher meetings, etc) "Sit down" in a casual situation (e.g. telling a friend or a family member to sit down) "Sit down please" a polite command (e.g. a teacher telling a class to sit, telling a friend/child/family member to sit down, etc)
