The second one, extends in the same direction, doesn't necessarily mean it parallels. It could extend in the same direction a mile away from the river. To parallel, in this type of context, means two things run along side each other. They are close and go in the same direction.
"The road parallels the railroad tracks." This means that if you drive on the road the railroad tracks are next to you and you are going the same way.
