Africa was part of a larger continent. It was still attached to South America at the time.

@COASTBC Thank you but I don't think that's the correct interpretation, because the continents were already separated in Holocene times.
The next sentence reads: "The same trajectories of human change were emerging in Africa as in several other parts of the world..." So does "not a place apart" simply mean "similar to the rest of the world"?

@oil_grease_man Oh ok. I always get the various ages of Earth mixed up, my bad.
That sounds correct, similar to other parts of the world.
Previous theory said that all humans originated in Africa, making it a place apart/different from the rest of the world.
Recent science is casting doubt on that theory.
