"Not yet" means something is going to happen, but it has not happened so far.
"Have you had dinner?" "Not yet."
"Have you gone shopping?" "Not yet."
Very similar is this: "I have not done my homework yet." Both "not" and "yet" are present.

"Yet" by itself is quite different. "Yet" by itself brings up something contrary to what was just said.
A: "I want to be a concert pianist."
B: Yet you never practice!
A: "I want to live in New York City."
B: Yet you hate crowds!
