@branduhn America is technically the continents of North and South America, but most people call the USA (United States of America) “America” for short

@branduhn America is used to refer to North America in general. US is one of the countries in North America.

@Megansimmer12 @GoB999 Thank you, so technically, using “America” for “the US” is not accurate, right?

@branduhn Not technically, but most of the people I know call the USA “America.”

@Megansimmer12 So even though it is technically wrong, a lot of people just speak English like that? I mean, using “America” for “the US”.

@branduhn At least where I’m from. It’s essentially slang in a way

@Megansimmer12 Ok, does this sound natural to you?
I have a question to ask you now, how often do you go grocery shopping?

america is hard, because "america" is rarely used (from what I hear) to refer to North America. In general, people will just say "North America", in America at least. They say "America" to refer to U.S. In general, there might be a discrepancy in usage for different ethnicities. I think Asian Americans might say "U.S." more, whereas white Americans might say "u.s." less, but "America" more.

For many/most people in the US (including me),
"America" = "the US" = "the United States" = "USA"
"the Americas" = "North America (incl. Central America) + South America"
According to Wikipedia, though, some people now consider the Americas (North + South) as a single continent and call that continent "America".
