the crux is the heart of the issue, the main point, the core of the issue. the central point in which everything else is built upon.
"It was very hot that day. even dogs didn't want to be outside, it was so hot I couldn't move. it was so hot the ground was parched. it was so hot...."
"Yes, ok, I get the gist. it was hot. please move on with the story."
