It seems it should be: “From the gallery’s collection are selected some of the brightest and most representative works, without exhausting the thematic and diverse types of artwork in the stored collection.”
The word “species” is mostly only associated with science. For example:
“A few different species of bears are polar bears, black bears, and grizzly bears.”
