@Oreo-dog A “participant in a sports competition” can be an athlete, or it can be an everyday person. Normally, you would not refer to someone as an athlete unless they compete at a higher level. For example: A school has a field day and you have to participate in a relay. You are not an athlete, you are a participant in a sports competition.

@Oreo-dog An athlete is a person who competes in sports. For example, Naomi Osaka is an athlete.
A competitor is someone or something that rivals someone or something else. For example, Ford and Honda are competitors in the car market. Another example: Naomi Osaka and Serena Williams are both competitors in Wimbledon.
Competitor can also apply outside of sports or business. For example: My daughter is my competitor when I play Mario Kart.
