@2tro They are synonyms. They mean the same thing. To step on something is more common in daily language (nobody would say “Ah, I trod on dog poop!”, they would say “I stepped on dog poop!”). From my experience, tread is reserved for poems or for historical texts. For example: the Gadsden flag shows a rattle snake with the phrase “Don’t tread on me.”
