We say "I have plans with a friend" instead of "I have a plan with a friend", even if you only have one plan

We always say “plans” to mean anything planned even if it’s going to one event.

When you use “plan” in singular you're talking about an specific plan which could be steal a house or whatever.
When someone tells you that has plans with her boyfriend that means the they're going to go on a date.
Plans in plural is appropriate.
