@sanders40 went down would be the more correct choice. however, it's super slangy. I hear people talk about how things "went down" more commonly when they're talking about a crime that happened.

aha I see. that means going down does not necessarily mean negative, turning out badly..

@sanders40 oh that's not what I'm trying to say. usually when people are talking about what "went down" it is about a negative event. I was just saying it sounds weird having someone say it about their mother and the birthday because you hear it more associated with how something "went down" (went down means happened) during a crime. it's very slangy. it means happened.
occasionally people just need what happened (occasionally not negative). it's a slangy way to talk and I think it would be hard to use it correctly.

"Dude, did you hear what went down at the party the other night? Jane drank too much alcohol and ended up in the hospital."
(went down means happened).
