Question about English (US)
How do you typically use/say "This is life"?
● I thought it's used to express some sort of comfort. But I felt a little bit speechless in the scenario when I was talking with a friend abore his returning my laptop:
I was like:
Hey, it's been a while, how've you been? Could I have my laptop back as I'd need it next week?
He:
Hey, I've been alright, just a bit busy. Sorry, could I keep your laptop for a few days more? You know, I haven't gotten my laptop fixed and I've been so busy. I guess this is just life.
● I just felt things like "this is just life" should be what I should have said to show somewhat "it doesn't really matter" and so I felt speechless at the moment. Do you guys typically or know people use the expression in that way? Did I miss something there?

I agree with you. The expression should be used to express comfort or consolation, not to try to excuse unacceptable behavior.
