「We still had a hard time grasping the reality of what happened.」の方が自然かもしれません。この意味の表現方は英語でちょっと難しいですね。

The grammar is certainly acceptable.
But, a sentence needs to make sense in relation to the other information which surrounds it. It’s not simply a matter of grammar.
If you don’t supply the surrounding context, I can’t help you make sure that you have the correct meaning.
